One of the main questions I have had people ask me is whether they should stay at hotels or casas particulares (locals’ homes) on their trip to Cuba.
Personally, I have never had the experience of staying at a casa particular, but I have heard feedback from friends. Staying at a family’s home is for sure a more adventurous choice. It allows you to explore and immerse in the Cuban culture. Of course, there are types of houses you could choose to stay in. Some have more experience with accommodating tourists, yet others are just starting. You may encounter very nice four stars treatment in one home, but you may encounter old and dirty bed sheets, towels, and low quality accommodation in another.
I am not saying this to scare you. But I am encouraging you to do some research before just renting out any casa privada out there. I would recommend getting recommendation from friends who have already been to one and had a good experience. You don’t want to spend your vacations in a home where you don’t feel comfortable.
Now if you are going for hotels. Cuba is really famous for various luxurious hotels, with the most famous being the Hotel Nacional. Hotels in Cuba can be very great as they provide you with internet access (with charge), international food, private pools and beaches. So, if you are not the adventurous type, I would say go for a hotel where relaxation and comfort are guaranteed.
Looking for hotels, I reccomend using Trip Advisor and Expedia which tend to give really nice tips. While for casas particulares, casaparticular.com is a really great website!
